Before buying rental insurance, you should check your own auto insurance policy. Typically, the same amount of coverage on your own cars will apply to rentals as long as they aren’t used for business. Make sure you have comprehensive and collision damage, or you won’t be covered. If you are, you can save you quite a few dollars on rental insurance. Check with the credit card company that you rented the car with. Most credit card companies will insure your rental. If you aren’t covered by either your own auto insurance policy or your credit card, consider buying rental insurance. You can get a waiver that protects any damage done to the vehicle, liability if you cause a wreck, personal accident insurance if you are injured in a wreck, or personal effects coverage if anything is stolen from the vehicle. Knowing what your current insurance policy and credit cards will cover can keep you from buying something you already have. A little research can save your money for things you want to spend it on.
